The bees found some blue pollen this week! Pollen comes in nearly every color, from the more common oranges and yellows to blue, purple, and even black. Bees use pollen as their protein source; without it, they would not be able to raise the next generation. However, pollen is highly perishable. The bees solve this problem by fermenting their pollen into beebread. If the fermentation process is unsuccessful, the bees will cover the pollen with wax, resulting in “entombed pollen” which they will not eat.
